About Us

PFLAG Portland, Maine offers compassionate peer support to the parents, families and friends of, and including, LGBTQ individuals through group discussion, education, advocacy and creating connections to community resources.

Our chapter reflects the vision and mission of PFLAG National:

PFLAG envisions a world where diversity is celebrated and all people are respected, valued, and affirmed inclusive of their sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression.

Our mission is to build on a foundation of loving families united with LGBTQ people and allies who support one another, and to educate ourselves and our communities to speak up as advocates until all hearts and minds respect, value and affirm LGBTQ people.

PFLAG History

PFLAG is a national non-profit organization with over 200,000 members and supporters and over 350 affiliates in the United States.  This vast grassroots network is cultivated, resourced and serviced by PFLAG National, located in Washington, D.C., the national Board of Directors and 13 Regionl Directors.

Founded in 1972 with the simple act of a mother publicly supporting her gay son, PFLAG is the original ally organization.  Made up of parents, families, friends, and straight allies uniting with lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) people, PFLAG is committed to advancing equality through its mission of support, education and advocacy.

Where is the T and the Q+?

Historically known as parents and friends of lesbians and gays, in 1998 PFLAG National formally broadened its mission to include transgender people.  In 2014 they changed their name to the word PFLAG, rather than the acronym that was sometimes seen as exclusionary, to better reflect to broad support for all LGBTQ+ people that PFLAG chapters nationwide have engaged in for decades.

PFLAG Portland Maine is located at The Equality Center, 15 Casco Street, Portland, ME. Peer support meetings are the first Tuesday of the month at 7pm (currently via secure Zoom).

(The Casco Street office is right behind the old 511 Congress Street facility -- we'll update the map here soon!)
